Real Rest


Whether you are just starting crossfit or training for the games , you need a rest day. Rest. Real rest. I used to do "rest day workouts" before I learned the hard way why you do not do that. I would just do a short 3 mile run with the dog, or "just" a heavy day, maybe even a short hard met-con. None of these are true rest days. I bet I went a month straight without taking a day off more than once. I was so sore all the time, always having to roll out because I was hurting!

True rest is imperative for your muscles. Trigger point, massage, naps, and good food are a must on your rest day. Coming off a rest day you should feel rejuvenated and ready to work hard. If you truly rest your body you can perform at high levels, set new P.R's and sleep better.

Some signs that you NEED rest:

soreness that won't go away
sleepless nights
leg cramps
less than stellar performance
sluggish

If you have any of these signs- take some rest! Sometimes it takes more than one day to recover from the craziness we submit ourselves to at CrossFit.

  2. THank you Jen:) I needed to hear this one for sure. 4-5 hrs of sleep a night + two a days, doesn't cut it. I'm going to start making sleep/real rest more of a priority...

  3. jess.. didn't you just get back from 10 days in costa rica? :)

    rest days are a must...but so is active recovery. a very fine line. after the Jesus wod i "hurt" for 3 days, no working out, but piss poor active recovery. the human body is an amazing machine, learn to listen to it, and you'll be amazed with what you can achieve
